Which, as a bonus, made Patrik Häggblad (the programmer responsible for making our game run smoothly) very happy.
The style also helped to optimize the game since, instead of making high polygon models with fancy materials, our Environment Artist - Leo Brynielsson – just focused on painting yummy textures with a handmade look. There are lumps of papier-mâché for foliage and painted cardboard for buildings - with thumbtacks, nails and tape keeping it all together. The world has a very crafted look and feel to it, and that was always a common denominator throughout the development of the style. Our VFX Artist André Jönsson put a lot of effort into making effects which make the connection between you and Louis feel both more real and magical. From there on it’s up to you to figure out how to earn his trust. You lean closer and poke him, he screams and runs away to hide behind a rock. You’re real, big as a hill and scary as thunder. We’re still yet to see the game launch on PC VR headsets, but we’re hopeful that could happen following Quest launch.In our new VR adventure you get to experience that precise moment when you meet the young cat boy Louis! You’re right there in his world, in the shape of the Ghost Giant. It is at times delightful and at others unflinching, with moments of VR purity that tear down the barrier between you and your companion.” It’s an experience in which emotional weight guides your each and every action, giving you reason to act beyond a simple state of failing and succeeding.
“Not just in its assured navigation of heavy subject matter, but in the way those themes bleed out into the wider world and the interactions you share with Louis. “Ghost Giant feels significant,” we wrote in our PSVR review. If you’re interested in VR storytelling, you owe it to yourself to try it out on PSVR or Quest. But what starts out as a quaint and whimsical adventure soon reveals a darker, more mature turn that tackles a tough subject from a refreshing angle. It’s a narrative-driven experience in which you embody the imaginary friend of a young boy named Louis. Ghost Giant remains one of our favorite VR games. Developer Zoink just confirmed as much on Twitter. Ghost Giant’s Oculus Quest release date is February 20.
In the end the game didn’t quite make that date, but it’s not far from release now. Back at our Holiday VR Showcase in November 2019, we announced the excellent Ghost Giant would be release on Oculus Quest the following December.
